What do you find works best for the string depth at the bridge.
1/8, 1/4, or 1/2 the diameter of the string? And, do you use the
same depth for the nut? I have been experimenting, and it does
seem to make quite a difference in the tone. |

My rule is as little as possible--that is, with the strings sitting on the nut or bridge, and only enough indentation to keep them from moving. There are problems as you get deeper; the sides of the grooves can squeeze the strings and rip the wraps, or keep the bridge from being moved back to upright. Sometimes I just put dents in the bridge top and let the string cut it's own way in.
If you're experiencing much difference in tone, it may be due to other things, like the bridge gripping the string and relieving the tension behind when you pull the bridge back. Usually people say that strings which are buried in the bridge sound dull. I don't know because I never let it get that far. :-) |

I have been trying out different string depths on three student violins.
The first one, I pressed the strings down with my finger just enough to
keep them from sliding. This violin had a bad nasal, raspy, sounding
G String, which was relieved somewhat by making the string slot 1/2
the diameter of the string. The second one, with the same initial set up,
had a Granddaddy wolf on the D String. With a 1/2 depth string, it
quieted it down a good bit. I am still working on the third one. I don't
think there is much hope for it using any depth.
If it matters, the first has Dominant Strings, The second has Octavia,
and the third a mixture of one Dominant, one Violino, one Tonica, and
a Brokat E String. I always change the bridge if the strings have worked
their way down into it, or drop the top down if there will be enough
string clearance left. I am going to try a few more things, keeping in
mind the rest of a correct set up.

It sounds like you may have found a "renegade" way to correct something that would be traditionally corrected some other way that didn't endanger the string windings. |
