I air dry it because I don't have a kiln. I haven't kept track of time, but the last time I cut a tree (maybe ten years ago) I cut some pieces down to about 20 to 25 mm x 70 mm, approximately quarter ...

I use willow, that I cut myself, but many people use spruce. However, many woods will work, ease of bending being important. Weight is normally not an issue. I have no ideas about wood suppliers, but ...

I think the key is very sharp jointer blades and slow feed. My first few fiddles had plates that were joined with a cheap tabletop jointer 30 years ago and they have held up fine. In any kind of produ ...

Is it flexible longitudinally, or just cross grain? I have used Sitka spruce that was that dense and usually with a little runout with what I consider to be acceptable results. Your opinion might be d ...

The closest I have come is a little more complicated. I have sometimes applied a thin coat of waterglass, then a coat of 10% calcium chloride to precipitate calcium silicate in the wood, then vinegar ...

Good point, but I doubt anyone has done much. Most "experts" contend that the post must be vertical. The one or two that have said "not always" have not said when or why, to my kno ...

I'm not that experienced or competent, but I think the effects will be different in different instruments. I don't see how you can take a post that fits and refit it at an angle without changing the p ...

You also need to account for humidity levels. If it has been high for a while the pegs will swell and the holes get smaller. Then when it gets dry the reverse happens. Liberal lubrication SEEMS to red ...

I'm not sure I can help, because I've never encountered this problem, but if you are otherwise happy with the varnish job, I would leave it alone for several more months to see (smell) what happens. I ...
