I buy end mills from the machine shop supply house, just slightly under 1/16.
After a second pass, there's enough wobble and error that the groove works out to be about 1/16" in the end.

Perhaps introducing scratches into the gluing surface tears the wood fiber enough to help the glue soak into the end capillaries of the fiber, allowing for a stronger joint.

The refractive index of mica is probably closer to oil rather than whatever resin is used in your spirit varnish. |
