I tend to practice in my small music/computer room, and sometimes it doesn't sound good. Mostly from bad bowing, but I think I am getting a lot of resonance from the surrounding instruments. It sounds a little better in the living room where there is less to resonate with.
But, the two best places I have practiced and it seemed to enhance the sound of my practice was a near the corner of a large room and outdoors. For the outdoors, I've practiced in my backyard where the sound can bounce off of my brick exterior...and in a public park amphitheater.
It seemed like once I opened up the practice space, things didn't sound so scratchy or weird. Is this just an illusion? Or is there really something to having a proper practice space to hear the fiddle better? Or less better? |

Yes, there is. You were just experiencing the principles of physics when you heard less of your violin (ie scratches) in larger spaces. So to conclude that you were playing better could/would be an illusion. From this standpoint, it would be better to play in smaller spaces to hear your instrument better (good and bad), in order to correct any unwanted sounds. |
