Hello everybody,

Some years ago, I bookmarked a forum thread on how to do great corner purflings. It's the one with those amazing close-up photos that Michael Darnton posted, and I've rarely encountered anything so useful on the entire Internet.

Lately I've been getting really serious about my violins, and I pulled up that old thread because I'm working on some purfling right now. It occurred to me that there's a whole forum here and probably a lot of great contributors who are posting stuff that would do me a lot of good. So here I am.

I'm a student of Will Bartruff. He runs a little school in Minnesota, and I really like his style. I asked him years ago if he would teach me how to make a violin, and he did it--through emails. I was embarrassed to tell him that I didn't have a shop, or even the right tools; but I bought the materials and the glue and started to work with the few hand tools I had. I sent photos to Will every week, and he walked me through the whole process--even when I had to unglue and start over. Since then, I've had a great respect for master Bartruff and his magical abilities to teach violin work, even to guys like me who don't have the means to do it properly. I was able to visit his school a couple of summers ago and learn some more from him, first hand.

I see some of the same qualities that helped me make my first violin right here on this forum. I've made several instruments by now (and I have the right tools--mostly), and I hope to continue doing this work. It can't be helped. I wish I could do it all day long, and maybe someday I will. I'd like to learn how to play the violin too. Dreams, dreams.

Anyway, my daughter is an accomplished guitarist, and she's made a few of those instruments from kits. Together we're planning to take over the whole world with a future home-based stringed instrument business and a few modest offerings. Wink

Thank you for such a super introduction.

I can understand how you feel about coming across some really helpful information either on the internet or from a live teacher.

For your information Michael Darnton has recently become a moderator of this forum. So you've come to the right place if you want to ask any questions on various violin making issues or problems.

You'll find most of the posts on violin making here on this page:

I wish you the best, and thanks for joining our forum.
