Those are a pain, Jack.
Unfortunately, since the movement of the rib against the block will eventually turn that type of crack into a hinge, I usually end up doubling the rib on the inside using a relatively long scarf joint. _________________ Jeffrey

Looks like you'll be moving on to forms, counter-forms, chalk and a very sharp scraper... _________________ Jeffrey

Jeffrey, do you find that the a rib which has been doubled is always much stiffer than before (even though it is the same thickness of the original after finishing)? |

Hi Ed;
I think a doubled rib tends to be slightly stiffer due to the lamination, but I wouldn’t say “much stiffer”. If doubling in the middle of a bout it can be compensated for if it appears to be a problem.
In Jack’s case, the crack is close to the block, so I don't think this will be an issue. The thickest portion of the doubling would be where the rib attaches to the block. The scarf joint would extend into the free area of the rib. _________________ Jeffrey
