I know this is a makers forum, but I hope its OK once in a while to turn our minds to why it is we make these things...
A piece of music that for me stands out as "desert island" material is the middle movement of the Mendelssohn piano concerto #1. I know its a PIANO concerto, but the interplay between the piano and the lower orchestral strings is SO serenely, simply and unpretentiously beautiful. I remember over 40 years ago hearing this for the first time and it was one of those melodies that gets in your head and you can't stop humming it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMclO4W5Mx0 It starts at 7 minutes in...
His violin concerto got me hooked on violin music next, and then I just turned into a Mendelssohn fan.
Love to hear from others on favorite pieces...

Anything I've never heard before. When we lived in the Upper Peninsula, almost 30 years ago, the Minnesota Public Radio (classical music) station used to do this thing where every day, all day, they would feature the music of a composer who'd been born on that day. Consequently, there was a constant flow of music I'd never heard from composers I'd never heard of. It was wonderful.
When we moved to Chicago I heard the local top 40 classical station play the Tchaikovsky violin concerto five times in one week because a soloist was coming to play it with the CSO that weekend. I turned that station off, and haven't listened to it since. _________________ new blog at my site! http://darntonviolins.com/blog

Difficult to have a favorite, among so much variety...
The Bruch-Scottish Fantasy violin concerto, in E-flat Major Op. 46 in three movements is one of my favorites.

Phillip Glass
King Crimson (circa late 60's to mid 70's)
Misc. K. Schultze as working background music.
much jazz and classical traditional music.
L. Subramaniam (fantastic Eastern violin)
etc.
really, overall, I think I like just about all of it. _________________ Look,

I have lots of favorites. Like Heifetz's Scottish Fantasy, Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1 played by Michael Rabin, especially the 1st Movement. This
is violin playing at it's best. His violin has many moods. Also, just about
anything at all by Fritz Kreisler. |

Michael,
MPR still does the composer birthday music. I don't know that it's on a planned schedule but I still hear the announcements along with their music. I usually listen in the evenings when I'm working. They do have a good variety.
