When making a violin, If you made the inside of the pegbox a couple or
so mms wider, to help keep the G and E strings from striking the side,
would this have any adverse affects? I measured several of my violins,
and they range in width from about 13 mms to a little over 15mms.

I cut some wood from the insie of the pegbox walls so that the E and G string will not touch it. This is the way I make it (on a viola):
