Howdy,

Been seeing this thing on at least two bows lately: the profile of the stick where the frog rides is round. Example:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/200989665372?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

I am not even sure what to ask. Is this realistic, doable, fake, desirable, explainable? Anything anyone has to say is probably helpful to me on this topic.

cheers,
wm_crash, the friendly hooligan

I don't know about any structural or performance advantage--maybe someone else does--but in this instance the reason is almost certainly to convey the appearance of a true Vuillaume bow. The old bows I've seen with rounded frogs, and I have a couple of them, lack a metal underslide. Although this tends to weaken the frog, it may also decrease damping, and improve the sound. It may be that if you're not going to use a metal underslide, you're better off with the Vuillaume-style rounded frog, although this is just a guess. Some makers are creating frogs without metal underslides, but not many seem to be making rounded frogs.

As wwit said this is a Vuillaume style frog. there are 2 advantages... and 1 disadvantage.
The V. frog rides on the two channels keeping the frog more stable in respect to the side to side wobble that some low end bows have. This however is not a problem with well made well fitted conventional frogs where the wobble is eliminated by a perfect fit of the frog to the stick facets and a very close fit of the eyelet width to the mortise width.
the other advantage is the razor thin edge of the ebony frog cheek on a conventional frog is eliminated.
The disadvantage is the extra work on the bow shaft... but maybe that is over come by not needing the perfect fit of the frog underside to the shaft and matching the eyelet to the mortise?
Cheers, Mat
