I'm having trouble with knowing when to up bow or down bow. Any suggestions or printed material that might help me. Many Thanks. |

If you are a beginner, most music will specify the markings for you. An up
bow will be denoted by 'V' character, and the down bow by the an upside
down U. The closest I can come on my keyboard is a small n character.
You can see the real stuff here.

Then slurs and ties will determine how long you keep the the up-bow and
down bows. You can see an example of this here.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tie_%28music%29 for ties and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slur_%28music%29 for slurs.
If there are no markings, it's usually the down bow on the beginning of each
measure. If there is a lead-in, it can either be an up bow or down bow, but
then choose one so that by the time you get to the beginning of the next
measure, you start the note on a down bow. |
