This year I began playing in two orchetras, if you are new to orchestra, write your experiences hear, good or bad. stay light hearted,
we all love to play, otherwise we would not do it.

good rehearsals this week, I'm in 2nd violin in both orchestras, when you rehearse something at home, it all seems to work, then it gets up to playing it inorchestra and you know your foot has been tapping at a different time from everyone else

Yes...it's good to train with metronome sometimes for this.

It wouldnt matter, conductors have their own time and so does everyone else, If you remember something too quick or slow, the tendency is to play to the tempo you have learned rather than what is being played, every time a peice of music is played, it is done at a slightly different tempo than the other times.

Yes....but at home or practice alone there is no conductor....so the metronome is only a tool for training. As you say, the tempo can be slightly slower or faster than what you have normally practiced with. So it's good to practice the piece with slower (can be challenging) and faster than usual tempo.

agreed, I have a metronome and most of the time the BPM is written next to the time signature on revised publictions. I just think its quite funny sometimes when everyone starts a piece in rehearsals we havent played for weeks. especially with a fanfare.

It's the muddy bit when we start playing together and it takes a few seconds to adjust to the conductor. 2nd violins is great and with being a beginner this year the more experienced players give some allowance because they know what its like. They know when its performance day that we will be able to play what we are allocated. the big responsibility of 2nd is the rhythm for the string section. as it works between the viola and 1st.

I actually have minimal experience with orchestra. Do you have problems hearing your own playing sometimes, when other players around you are playing forte?

Surprisingly not, you hear your own instrument louder than others. the hardest part is adjusting to play between the different dynamics. the two conductors I play with have differing ideas, but you have to adjust to play as they want because they hear the whole orchestra. (no prima donnas especially in 2nd) if I keep with orchestras hopefully I will get a solo peice. but that will be a while from now Very Happy

Rehearsals today, went well. still missing out a few of the eighth note runs. they work well at hpme, but when plated at tempo, best to attempt them when I'm a little more confident. Very Happy

You can tend to get a bit carried away at a nice phrase, then you have to remember to be part of the orchestra.

I wonder where I would be able to find more information on those who have
problems localizing sound. I noticed after having measles at a very young
age and having fluid buildup in my ears, that when there is ambient noise
(ie. say in a crowd of people or in the case of orchestra other players playing)
I am unable to hear clear sounds near me.

Small groups and ensembles are not a problem to me, but once you bring in
a full size orchestra or close to one, that's when I have the trouble. I'm just
wondering if anybody else might have the same problem.

I think it might be troublesome for most people, even without a fluid problem. I cant hear the harpsichord at all on the other side of the hall. I have no problem with the brass, they sit right behind us. and drown out the clarinets. and woodwind. if you can hear a few players around you and follow the conductor (quite difficult at times with unorthodox timings) you have to trust the conductors ear. I find myself even when I am playing in ensemble that the need for a metronome occurs. I am trying to envisage the problem you have. but as I am unaware of the limitations I would not like to profess.

It's hearing even my own playing that I have the difficulty with. Similarly, if
I was in group gathering with lots of people talking, and you were next to
me trying to say something to me, I would have trouble hearing you.

I think I shall have to investigate this with a hearing specialist.
