it seems like a box arrangement would give the strength and light weight, something like a violin but not shaped like one.

I'm thinking about building an electric violin. I would prefer the scroll and peg at the end rather than the guitar tuner idea. I have an old violin which I could take parts from but I do not want to ruin a violin when it could be possible to get a neck and fingerboard with the scroll. even any offers if you can post to UK.

I also would like to know any info as to which pickups and strings would be best. I am only thinking at the moment and it will probably take the best part of a year to build. but the info on strings, pickups/transducers and material would be helpful.

I plan a solid body made of MDF, and incorporating volume and tone sliders, with a 1/4" jack output. I do have a woodworking friend who would make the body.

if I am wrong with the MDF idea please can anyone advise as to which material I should use.

i think mdf would be kind of heavy, depending on how thick it ends up. there is lots of info here , especially if you are in the planning stage
