"Hi,

me new here and an old loofer of things with strings but me has never
build a violin ~ yet.

So me gotts a question.

Seems to me that plate arches are much lower now a days than way back
when, once upon a time, so far long ago me no longer remembers.

Is a simple question me has.

Why?" Not why me no remembers...Why are arches lower than long ago time? Rolling Eyes

thank you and
blessings

i am sure someone can answer better, but for a short answer, strads were lower and a lot of people copy them .

Padma, my friend! Welcome aboard!

This is a pretty friendly, laid-back place. You can probably get a good answer-- or discover that no one has a clue. Either is possible.

I was only aware that some of the early makers from other areas (Gasparó da Saló come to mind) had very high arching, but I thought that the archings of the Cremonese makers were all similar, from Amati on down. But maybe there were still earlier instruments, perhaps still trying to invoke a little of the lute, with higher arches. If so, I am simply not aware of them. But I am not an historian, so it is not surprising that I don't know.

At any rate, I am delighted to see you here!

Hi Chet,

Thank you for the welcome. Nice to see you here. Yes me has taken it in to me head to build a cello...in fact me looking for scantlings of Giuseppe Guarneris cellos...if by chance you might have something...that would be appreciated.

thanks

The only ones I have are for a couple of Strads, a Montagnana, and a Rugieri...but honestly, if you want my opinion, the pattern given in Henry Strobel's book makes a very nice cello, very similar to the Davidov Strad cello. I have never seen the one you are hoping for-- I take it that you have checked The Strad posters online, to see whether they have it?

I haven't seen the word "scantlings" since my boat-building dreams of many years ago. It brings back nice memories.

Chet
