I know that maker!
I recognize the violin as mine, but I don't know the year without knowing the internal number on it.

Lovely instrument! I hope no one will mind if I take advantage of the opportunity to ask a question about its finish. I've been noticing this particular pattern of fading (or is it "brightening"?) on violins old and new: lighter fields in the corner areas of the top and in the upper corners on the back, with fading in an inverted V on the lower back. Since this fiddle dates from 2004, it must have the look the maker intended; but on old violins this same pattern must result from wear and use. So two questions: what causes the finishes of old violins to do this? And what do modern makers do to achieve the same look? (Oh, and is this kind of wear characteristic of one type of finish?) Thanks for any help.

It's just the natural wear pattern, but I started it off in advance. The idea comes from the way violins wear, which is completely a function of where they get touched. The more touch, the more wear. Because the back of the violin sits on the player's shoulder when played, that spot gets the most wear, so that's wear the varnish, which is very tender, wears off first.
