What do you folks use that you find particularly good for lighting the inside of a violin when you do inspections and sound post work?
Thanks!... Mat |

Any sporting goods store sells "bore" light, its about 6mm dia, flexible shaft about 6" long. I stick it through lower F hole. Maybe $5. _________________ Dave in the Blue Ridge

Cliff, those look pretty nice, so you can probably use it hands free? _________________ Dave in the Blue Ridge

I made my own, but agree that it is the best I've ever tried. |

I made mine out of curiosity, but to to get the materials and using my own transformer, it still cost about what doug is charging, if you are only making one, your are probably better off with dougs. |

Just a note to the DIY crowd. I recently purchased a roll of inexpensive LED ribbon on Ebay for a different lighting project. I was VERY disappointed with the product. The light output was MUCH lower than the strip that I use for the Luthier Lights, and the color was off. I buy my LEDs from a very high end supplier, and pay almost 10 times what the cheapo LED ribbons cost. As far as I'm concerned, it's worth every penny to supply a quality product. _________________ Doug Wall

Thanks everyone... Just wondering what might be new out there...
I have a a DIY led strip I built a few years ago... Got the light strip from an auto surplus.. I just use 1 model for all... it has 9 led's and is about 6" long works OK, not sure of the light output... but my power supply alone cost about $25!
I'm calling Doug next time!
Cheers, Mat |

Nobody mentioned this, so I will. A good hobby shop sells all sizes of model train mini-lights. They are all 12 volts. Turns out the BIGGEST ones are only about a cm long and 4mm diameter. I take two or three of these in paralell and solder to the long pigtail out of a plug-in transformer.
They last a long time and are cheap. I line them up and put some masking tape on the solder joint. And much smaller ones are also made, although of smaller wattage.
They are purely incandescent and non-directional. |

I seriously doubt that they could "hold a candle" to Luthier Lights. The violin size puts out 47 lumens of daylight white light with almost no heat.
Edit- From another website about model railroad lighting-
"Compare that to a GE 14 volt Midget bulb which gives approximately .3 lumens" _________________ Doug Wall

I like my little "bore light" it fits in my pocket, no cords, no transformers, LED no heat at all, and I don't have to wear my sunglasses. _________________ Dave in the Blue Ridge
