Gorgeous, but real?

Looks like a real fiddle. I don't see much antiquing on my screen. |

Yes, I think its a new violin. I like the finish, but very rough cut "f"s. No nicks, no rubs, no worn spots that I can see. _________________ Dave in the Blue Ridge

I don't see any evidence of a neck scroll graft, usually rules out 18th century, at least if the neck is original. _________________ Honesty is the Best Policy

1798 may be post-baroque, so chance of seeing a neck-angle graft on violins made after 1760-70 become less common. _________________ Dave in the Blue Ridge

1798 is not baroque, but the original "baroque" style necks did not go out of favour till 1800-1850, a 1798 violin with a totally modern neck is very unlikely. In 1798 a neck would be likely one piece neck top block or nailed on neck, a la Stradivari, if the neck was morticed into the block in 1798, it presumably wouldn't have as much overstand or neck angle as a totally modern setup.
From my understanding, modern style necks did not appear in 1760-1770, but rather STARTED appearing in 1800 even though they were still unlikely at that time, by 1850 most necks were modern, it took 50 years for the modern neck style to totally dominate. _________________ Honesty is the Best Policy

Is it possible that the top and back have been refinished?.... the colors do not seem to match the ribs... maybe just the angle of the pic.
but a bigger question... do people really buy violins in the $500+ range on line based on photos without seeing the instrument? ..just can't imagine doing that. .. cheers, Mat |
