I'm in process of varnishing my latest Strad 1716, took this photo today for a discussion on how people finish their peg boxes, thought I'd share here. 3 thin coats of golden yellow, and so far one coat of Italian Brown. Using balsam varnishes, love the smell, and cures fast. Whatever I put on the outside of the pegbox, I also like to do the inside.

By the way, this is a fiddle on which I put the burnt brown sugar stain. I did not leave anything on the surface of the wood, though, wiped it down several times with wet cloth until I got no more sticky left on the wood. Being hydroscopic, all the excess sugar has to be removed. Let dry, light scraping also brings excess out of the end grains. Then a coat of sealer.

Went one more shade darker, and that's all this morning. Maybe should have left well enough alone, but there it is. Will put on a clear coat, then take some of the shine off with tripoli in a few days. No sun this morning, so it'll have to go in the light box now. I really love how this balsam varnish levels out beautifully, but you have to work quick.... I'll post some closeups when all finished. Don, Not planning to antique, or add any craquelure as this is a different varnish from my other posting.

Yes, there are nice little brook trout in that creek behind my house. Some rainbow too.

The violin looks nice Dave! I hope it pleases you. Where is the maple from, l'm going to guess that it is European.
And you said it is balsam varnish, would that be something that you made?

Romanian maple, Simeon Chambers Spruce. I got the balsam varnish through Howard Core. I wish I had used Robson's balsam ground system, but I ran out.

That is a nice instrument.

Dave, in contribution to your original post, I varnish the inside of the box and then the day I set it up, I paint the inside of the box with India ink, let it dry 30 minutes, and then rub it out with a dry rag. The ink stays in the corners and bottom of the box, but also in the nicks, scratches, chips and so forth of the box sides. It looks like the box to an old instrument this way. At least, that is the way I am doing them at the moment.

Rasp lines and such are embraced this way instead of concealed. But I like the look for now.

Sound sample this latest violin. I thought I had posted this earlier, but don't see it here.

I'm happy with it. Wish I had a decent bow though.
