If you can take an ounce or so and let it steep in mineral spirit or turpentine, it might make an excellent color additive for an oil based varnish. I have mine reduced to a thick tar, and it doesn't take much to make a fairly dark varnish. I use alazarin crimson to take it from yellow-brown to a nice nutty brown. _________________ Dave in the Blue Ridge

That's what I did; I dissolved it with Varsol until I had a solution about as viscous as motor oil. It provides a nice color on it's own when mixed into varnish, a brown color leaning slightly towards red. _________________ Bill |

And it makes a nice durable finish you can drive on.
Here's a violin I made some years ago, a red-spruce top, using this colorant, kinda boring I think now though. Can't remember if I added any red to this or not. I've used this on others that I left less intense, more like tobacco color which is nice too. The trouble is knowing where to stop applying color. I may be tempted to strip this and do something different now.

Dave... I like that colour... if anything, it needs a bit of antiquing.
I sure would not be redoing it.... but then I'm a believer of the kiss principle.... and I sure hate doing things twice!

Matt, good idea, its a very nice smooth and even finish, maybe that needs to be broken up, just a little, instead of doing soemthing different. _________________ Dave in the Blue Ridge
