Michael, thanks for the information. I had tried cooking the crystals down in the past. The only problem was that to me, the end-result varnish looked dirty, or better said, cloudy and murky. Perhaps I didn't cook the crystals long enough before combining to the oil or I cooked them too long. (I use artists' grade oil having learned the hard way in my earlier days.)

This time when I tried making the varnish by dissolving the whole crystal in the hot oil, the varnish was very clear instead and worked as described above. At this point, the stuff appears to me to be a "perfect violin varnish". My question is, though, Am I missing something that will turn around and bite me in the future?

Cloudy in the bottle or on the wood? In the bottle it's 2000x thicker than it will be on the violin and that doesn't mean anything.

That's why I stopped using it. Then, 10 years later, it was clear. I couldn't wait 10 years.
