I have a fiddle that for years I did not like it never played it much
sound was too bright so the other night I got looking at the bridge
& wondered if it was too wide between the G string & the edge of the bridge .
So I filed the side of the bridge so it would have less space between the string & the side on the G & also the E .
It change the fiddle big time for the better . Wonder if anyone has
done this & it helped the sound or was it just luck Have tried many
other bridges with no luck (No Mat Roop Not in shine again) ken |

I'm having trouble picturing what you are describing, is it the thickness near the outside of the bridge or is it the edges you are trimming?
But yes, thinning the bridge in the outside areas does make a difference. |

Hello Don I was thinking maybe the bridge was too wide .
I trimmed the edge so I now have 5 MM from the edge to the G string
& around that on the E side edge of the bridge it seems to put the top edge of the bridge more in line with the base bar & sound post It changed it big time for the better plays easy quick response Not as bright & harsh , darker sound
.Don't know how to explain the sound any other way .
I had changed bridges, sound post, strings, many times with no luck .
I must tell you its has a tag Sebaftian Kloz mittenwald 1901
with a signature but a tag is a tag & I love to play it now & that is what it,s about enjoying playing it I have had it for over 30 years
& just did not like it . Its a keeper now Ken |

That's interesting. Glad you like it.
Sometimes I go back and rework the bridge/setup and find that it makes things a lot better, often after the violin has sat for a while. I might start out thinking 'don't make the bridge too thin' and forget about it. It doesn't take much to change things sometimes. |

I think I understand what you've done, and yes it does make a difference where the string hits the bridge. I have a 5 string that when all the strings are moved to their 5 string positions, the C and G are both weakened, but when I set it up for 4 strings in their usual spacing, it makes all the difference in the world, and is one of my best players. The solution I think is to get a slightly wider bridge for 5 string play. _________________ Dave in the Blue Ridge

Hello Dave Just wondering on a 5 string fiddle should the base
bar be nearer to the 5th string .
I guess what I am trying to say the base bar & sound post has spot more or less the same distant from the bridge feet so a larger bridge would put the edge of bridge feet way out past the base bar . As you said when It`s strung like a regular fiddle it is ok. I maybe all wrong in my way of thinking I Would like to hear from others with more Knowledge than me on this .
