John Stagg, the master bow maker from Bristol, England, has just published a book titled, "Bow Making and Repair." In 249 pages, he discusses stick making, frog and button making, and several kinds of repairs. Along the way, he interjects many hints and notes, in which he discusses his ideas for saving time and improving the result. Nearly all of the illustrations are careful drawings, which are easy to understand.

His general approach is definitely English, having started at Hills. He includes descriptions of several rarely-discussed procedures, including making a rounded Vuillaume-style ferrule, handling real whalebone and tortoise shell, and fuming a stick.

He describes repairs to screw and eye, bushing stick and frog, respringing and straightening the stick, pearl eyes and slides, head faces, splicing a bow, pinning heads, repairs to the tongue of a frog, and doing a cheval. This is followed by discussions of various gluing, filling, wrapping and metal repairs. There's also a chapter on rehairing.

At the end, he includes a bit of history from his 6 years at Hills.

Recommended. Around $100, plus shipping from England.

I have known John Stagg for many years, he is an excellent bow maker and has written a really good in depth book on making and restoration. I specialise in old French bows and have often wondered how to do some of the more difficult repairs such as freeing a seized screw or replacing a damaged nipple.

I bought one of the first copies and I am delighted with it.

This book is clearly written, it has excellent engineering quality drawings and covers everything you are likely to need even including how to make the specialised cutters and tools you need.

Every time I open it, I notice something really helpful, usually about the fine details of accomplishing a procedure. E.g., pinning a silver tip plate, milling a frog, or making a difficult repair. I think this is a rare bargain.

I got the book a few days ago, still have to email John to thank him.

I am glad to see that it's not just a rehash of Henderson/Bolander/Kun&Regh.

cheers,
Cosmin
