Excellent!
Any instructions as to concentration? % solution, etc.? I will definitely use this on my next instrument.
Incidentally, Michael; you may remember a conversation we had about ten years ago, wherein you stopped me as I was carving a viola top, because I was trying to follow your instructions about carving violin tops...and I said that I wondered whether that was why many players had commented that my early violins "sound like a viola"....
Anyway, an update on that is that my wife, Ann, suggested that I try stringing one of those early "violins" as a viola. I used the bottom four strings from a five-string fiddle set (thus having the right tension for a violin-sized instrument), and it made an astonishingly good 14" viola. Your observations as to what makes a good viola versus violin sound were spot-on!
So, thanks again, Maestro Michael!

I've been using about 10% by volume. That solution needs to be used fairly soon or it will grow undesirables. Once the moisture is dried out of it the glycerin is stable.
I remember you saying once that 100% glycerin makes the purfling too soft to use, so I haven't tried that. Next time I may use 20%. |

Not a good idea to use methylene blue to preserve the mix longer, eh?
cheers,

If you want to preserve it I recommend phenol, but why bother? |

I mix about a shot at a time, and do quite a few strips of purfling all at once, then throw the rest, such as it is, out. I lay all the purfling on my bench, brush on the mix, wait a few seconds, pick it all up and dry it off, and bind it in a bundle. It doesn't need to be soaked or anything like that--a little goes a long way. _________________ new blog at my site! http://darntonviolins.com/blog

The glycerin is a great idea. Michael, perhaps this is a foolish question but How well does glycerin work with lining and ribs, particularly the C's?
Thank you. _________________ Randall Shenefelt |

My guess would be that we would not like what it does to wood that's tonally important. It makes the purfling feel really soft, and I don't look for that in tone wood. Maybe on ribs it would be OK, but I'm not going to be the one to try it. :-) _________________ new blog at my site! http://darntonviolins.com/blog

That sounds logical.
That it helps bending the purfling is a great improvement in itself. I am going to try it on my next instrument's purfling. Thank you again. _________________ Randall Shenefelt |

Hey Chet, thanks for the update on the show. Looks like it's getting to be a good size. Nice table presentation.
Hope some of the contacts you made pan out to sales.
