.....It's been quite a while since there have been any comments about resources. What have folks found to be the most helpful? I'll have to say it's been workshops and coaching by makers, but I've also benefited from reading and watching videos.

Thanks for keeping up the links... I have not checked them all out, but at times when I am looking for something specific, this is a quick way to find the sources... nice to have them here...saves a lot of searching...Thanks, Mat

I got the book. Thank you for recommending it - I would never have heard of it otherwise. It's interesting - it describes how the French art of bowmaking was almost lost in the 1960s, then the government opened a boarding school in Mirecourt school that included a bowmaking program and trained quite a few bowmakers. Most of them were interviewed for the book (really it's a doctoral thesis rather than a book). Although their life was not always easy they all said that they were glad to have been students and would do it again.

Glad you thought it was worthwhile. I was happy to find it at a local university library. Although the discussion of the different schools of making (the various masters) was interesting, I thought the interviews were fascinating. Some diverse opinions there about the future of bow making schools, and of the art! I found the statement about Éric Grandchamps intriguing. He was most influenced by a single bow made by Pierre Simon, which he handled only once, for one hour. I heard (and saw) a fabulous bow by Simon, but probably not the same one!

I was pleased to find that the Stanford University Library has placed all issues of the CAS Journal on line. I've added links for the issues with articles relevant to bow making. There may be a few more, and I'll add them as I locate them.

I've posted new material, with links where possible. These include some fairly technical papers by Knut Guettler, all of the bow-related articles from the now-defunct Catgut Acoustical Society, many of the recent articles from The Strad, and an index for all of the VSA articles published since its inception.

I found the VSA articles very interesting and helpful. Some explain how to perform complex repairs. The article on "The Stick," by Benoit Rolland was especially interesting. Additionally, there are links to pdf's of copyright-free publications, including Bolander's first booklet, 1,000 Bows and a Tribute, The Re-Hairing of Bows, an excerpt (translated from French) from Maugin's 1834 book, Manuel Du Luthier, and an article by Max Moller--this was recommended by John Bolander.

There are also some new videos, including a clip about the UNH violin and bow-making workshops, which are also held in Claremont, CA each summer. These are much better than even the best books and videos!
