Hello friends,

Can anyone depict step by step to make a Viola d'amore.
I want to know the dimensions, wood thickness, and any special bracing (if required).
1) Any difference in making with the regular viola?
2) How many possible ways are there to install the sympathetic strings?
3) Which strings (playing strings) will work better metal or gut and what will be the differences in volume and sustain?
4) If I want to buy one what should be the price difference with the viola?

Any suggestion is welcome...
Merry Christmas to all

Sobers

You've probably seen all this before, but:

I found a viola d'amore forum reference to a plan in the Danks book (seen on the list at the link below), but a search in Google Books only turns up references to the materials in the Stradivari relic collection.

There's this 3 part article on a recreation of the Strad design by Andrew Dipper:

Looks like the NMM has some examples in the collection but no drawings and nothing online.

The old CIMCIM list of drawings for museums has nothing, but it hasn't been updated since 2000, so you might check all the individual museums.

Good luck!

Thank you Andres,

Yes I know about the society and I've gone through all the available videos of Viola d'amore, Viola da gamba and Bowed guitar but thanks for the other links, I will read with care.
Do you have any idea of the price difference with regular viola?
