hi all I'm relatively new to violin making, I'm in the middle of my first viola. How long on average does it take to carve the plate. Also I'm curious about plate tuning software, any good recommendations out there?

How long it takes depends on the wood, your carving skills, your tools and how picky you are about the results. No idea about plate tuning software because I don't do that.

I use the same software that Stradivari and his friends used. It seems to have worked well enough for them. Now if your objective is to NOT be like them. . . . I guess that's never been my goal.

I usually take about 25 to 30 hours for each plate.

Most of that is on the cosmetics. I've done them faster, but they don't look as nice when I do. The spruce cuts faster for a few reasons. The time gained in that area is lost cutting the ff's and fitting the bar so the top plate takes me about the same amount of time as the back.

I have never plate tuned either. I am not even sure what I would look for if I did.
