That describes some of the best instruments I have ever heard. Under the ear, they don't have it. A few feet away they start popping. _________________ Randall Shenefelt |

A few of mine are like that. But often the other player LIKES the sound under the ear. An even stranger thing happened to me once. I played a friend's fiddle (by a pretty well-known maker) and liked it. When HE played it the A string sounded pretty bad from a few feet away. And he is a much better player than I. |

Rs Lp thank you for the reply . I have also found with back up
when a fiddle is played it covers up a lot of Faults .
I find most Younger players now have to have the sound cranked up to max that you cant tell if it is a good fiddle .
I can tell you that there is a lot of young Players 6 yr`s & up can sure make a fiddle sing I don't think old gut strings would last for a tune . ken |

I sure experience that. When I first started learning to play I put it down to just my poor playing (and usually it was!). But I'll regularly get a friend or my teacher to play one that I've worked on. I'm regularly amazed at the difference in sound.
It's a little odd to me though that there are big differences with some, and very little difference with others.... |
