I've been doing a lot of bow repair lately, so looked online to see what Pernambuco would cost -- maybe I'll try my hand at making a bow. Stunned, I decided to lookaround my shop for some kind of dense wood to use. I remembered an odd heavy piece of wood a supplier gave me, it was 36" x 3.5" x 3.5" and weighed about 20 pounds I thought it might be hornbeam or some other ironwood. Its been sitting in my wood stack for about 10 years, and came off a pallet of odds and ends and he had no idea what it was. I cut a slice off the end to look at grain and color, then it struck me to check the SG to help identify. Turned out to be .77, and using my magnifying goggles looked at the end grain and color and behold, I was holding a humungus chunck of pernambuco. Just to be sure, I did a little research on line and confirmed. I cut it into 10 large pieces trying to stay near to quarter cut. Each piece is large enough for 3 bows, so all together I should be able to get 30 pieces. Its all pretty much center of the tree, about 75% dark wood, and occasional small twigs, most of which I can maneuver my way around. How great is that!? _________________ Dave in the Blue Ridge

Hi Dave...cool... can you authenticate its lineage considering the current and possible future legality of pernambuco?
happy cambering! ... Cheers, Mat |
