|

Hi there,
I'm relative new to violin and bow making. I started my first violin in summer 2016, and made 2 bows in 2017. One from cheaper pernambuco and one from snakewood. I've got a bit better pernam. blank for #3 (Lucchi 5400), which i'll start on when i know a bit more what i'm doing
The snakewood bow is 63g, 74 cm total length. It sounds a bit harsh. Is this due to the nature of the wood? Or can it be mellowed down a bit by thinning the last 10-15 cm at the head?
And do bows play in like violins?
Thanks, Emil |

Hi, Emil!
Congrats on making two bows! I can't really say I know what I'm doing yet, so take my reply for what it's worth.
I have no idea why a bow made from snakewood, vs Pernambuco, would sound harsh. Any idea what the Lucchi is? Is it fairly stiff, or pretty flexible? How much hair did it get? If it's more flexible than stiff, maybe it could use less hair.
You can search through posts on Maestronet regarding whether bows, or even instruments, play in. There doesn't seem to be a broad consensus, but the stories of a "shop bow" sounding better than most everything else are legend. So, maybe they do play in, to some degree.
How did you learn to make a bow? Did you attend a workshop somewhere?
Best of luck with your endeavors!

Hi Bob and thanks for your reply.
I didnt take any course, just watched some youtube clips and read usefull info on sites from reputed makers like Andreas Grutter. I bought a few blanks, silverwire, leather and bone. I'm using old frogs for now, i tried to make one but that's got to messy.
The snakewood didnt come with a Lucchi number. There's about 5.2 grams of Mongolian hair on it, rosin is Andrea a Piacera.
I remember reading snakewood gives a dry sound, good for baroque but less for other classical music. I wondered if it could cause harshness. Anyway, i think i'll remove 1-2 grams and see what happens
I'm on the Pegbox as well, will search a bit about snakewood.
Thanks again and regards, Emil |
