Lots of info on line when the use of the thru neck diminished.
My question is when and where was it first used commercially? how old can a thru neck be?
Did Strad Guarneri use any thru necks?
Thanks... Mat

The through neck is not a characteristic of Cremonese method, but the Brescians, da Salo for instance, used it, and it was the method for attaching a neck previous to that, far, far back. It was commonly used by many other schools, right up to the early 1900s. So basically a through neck is not indication of age, at all.

I know this is an old topic , but
can you put a block and fit a regular neck on one,
this is a cheap german one, so if it is too time consuming or more trouble than its worth let me know

Anything can be accomplished if you have the time and skills. Normally this would not be economical, but if someone wants the practice. . . . why not?

I did it once on an old American-made junker. With the top off I installed a regular block. Then cut the funny stuff (block part) off the original neck, glued on an extension and mounted it in the new block. Don't remember all the details, it was over 30 years ago and before I knew anything. But it couldn't have been too hard and it worked. It was still a junker but playable.

Photos aren't the greatest, but my version of the repair you're talking about.

Before

After

As LP notes, I had to make some fixes to the height and then it was essentially a neck reset.
