Trying my hand at touching up the finish on an inexpensive Chinese violin.
After repairing a crack at the F hole I began playing with color matching and leveling the chipped area of very thick and brittle varnish. Using the spirit varnish from International Violin I was reasonably successful with matching color . I applied multiple coats of clear to bring finish level with the old varnish.
Not an expert result by any means but a beginning of what will evidently be a long learning curve. I'm unclear as to whether this approach is the best or traditional method.
My next challenge I discovered is to reduce the gloss of the clear varnish as it is pretty obvious in certain light.
Was I wrong to use this varnish or is there a method to reduce the gloss?
I will also need to replace the purfling (paint) that was damaged and my thought was to simply paint that in as the original was. Any suggestions what paint or ? should be used would be most helpful .
This violin is simply a learning tool with no value other than to me.
Thanks to anyone who can offer some words of advice.

Here is a good discussion on how to "paint" purfling.

and here you can get a start on reducing gloss on varnish...But stay away from the sandpaper!
https://maestronet.com/forum/index.php?/topic/324979-how-to-dull-down-shiny-varnish/

Not sure of your exact situation, but I have found that if you apply oil based varnish then wipe it down like a polish, the sheen can be quite glossy , but that can be moderated depending on how hard you polish the newly applied varnish. if you polish moderately it will dry fairly glossy, but if you polish moderately, let dry til the start of being tacky, then lightly wipe it down, the finish will be quite satiny... takes some practice though!

Good luck!... Mat

Hi Oleg,
Not clear what you are asking. If you are asking where I got the varnish materials it was from International Violin.

I'm simply a hobbyist and have no website.
I hope you enjoy the forum .

Hi Oleg
A friend gave me this very inexpensive and abused violin to practice repairs.
It's a typical chinese $60 internet special. Very Happy
