As a beginner, I'm having a great deal of difficulty reaching my fingers comfortably on the G string. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Make sure your posture, and the way you are holding the violin is correct.
Then, with a relaxed, straight, or slightly arched left wrist, bring your elbow
out to the right, so that you can look down through the C Bout, and see the
back half of your forearm. Don't grab the neck, let the thumb and forefinger move as the elbow directs. This will put your fingers in position to come
down on the G string. Then, you practice, practice, practice.

Try moving your elbow to the right.

Sorry Jack, I see that you already mentioned elbow position and covered the subject pretty well.

When I eventually learned not to strangle the neck, the elbow did suffice to "steer" the action for me.

Thanks to all who replied here. After my second lesson and my instructor telling/showing me correct way to place thumb, curve fingers, and swing elbow a bit, it all seemed to work. I can now get three fingers comfortably on the G string. Thanks.
