What kind of wood or woods are best to use for plugs and wedges? Do you buy the semi-made plugs and wedges and then shape them to fit or do you just buy the wood and do it all yourself?

I use poplar for the plugs and basswood for the ferrule wedge.

I agree with Doug... I cut wedges from a poplar board and carve them from scratch.... and never reuse the old ones... Mat

I use maple for the wedges in the head and frog and willow for the spread wedge.
My friend uses maple for all threee wedges and I have started to try the maple spread wedge just a bit harder to fit.

I use scraps of maple, cut into long strips with the grain running in the right direction and just cut them off as needed and then cut them to fit,
with all the wood in a violin shop seems to be a waste to buy them precut.
