How much do new, higher end strings make in the sounds you'll produce? ??? I find my strings seem not too bright and a bit dead. It's a new violin that is not entry level but not much above that. Thanks

Hi VG, Assuming that your bridge and soundpost are in the correct position
to start with, Yes, The kind of strings you are using can make a difference.
There are many, many different opinions on what is the best strings to use.
If you want a good, soft, low tension string, I would recommend Violinos.
If you want one a little brighter, with a quicker response, try a set of
Corelli Crystals. Later, as you advance in your studies, you might want to try a set of Dominants. Good Luck in your search for a string that you like. |

Hi Violinguy
Remember that new violins take some time to play in; the sound should change over time if you continue to play it enough.
But if you feel your strings are producing a dead sound, you probably should try some new ones. Oftentimes violins are sold with old or poor-quality strings.
It may take some time to find the strings that are ideal for you and for your violin. Most beginners start with metal strings. I think Helicore is a good quality metal string. As you progress, you will want a warmer sound and Dominant (which is not metal but perlon) will be a good next choice.
Good luck and enjoy! |

I've read that "Red label" is OK for beginners (first year) then to move onto "dominant" - I hear that over and over.
Apparently "Dominant" is the coolest strings. The same company (Thomastik) has made a new string called "Vision" - I wonder if they are as good as "Dominant" ?
Have any of you tried both Dominant and Vision ?
Cheers,
Craig |

Just curious...are those highly esteemed "gut strings" still available at all?
If so, what do they go for?
Thanks. |
