Gantafistor - your theory concerning oriental tonal language and ease of learning by ear is very insightful. I'm wondering if Japanese is considered "tonal" however, in the same way Chinese is? A very interesting idea! Shirley |

To answer you Shirley, traditional Chinese AND Japanese music are both similar in all point: utilisation of the sames instruments, scales, harmonics... But Its more hard to find out for traditional music in japan because the capitalisation the after the second world war had brings western classical music so the traditionnal is greatly dissipated...But there still (hopely) many festival in the north of Hokkaido who's playin traditional music (I hope I could go there someday!).
However, YES they both use (for traditional music) the same "tonal" aspect: like the microtonal for example (in a scale there can have I think 32 notes?) but just the fact that they use both similar instruments are the most representative that it's the same style.
