Is there a preferred sounding point for the G string ?
I tend to slide right over the string (without sound) particularly when the passage is quick.
Do I have to just use more pressure than on the other strings ?
More rosin ? _________________ I NEVER PRACTICE. I'M NOT FAMOUS YET. |

I have never had G do that....
E has done it some- usualy with a squeal afterwords.....
Does the G and/or D strings seem to be a little harder to start the note
than A or E like you have to push a little into the string to get the tone to
start ? Try wiping the string with some Isopropyl dampened cloth and
re-rosin from the bow. If that didn't help -- compare the left and right
ankle of the bridge. Is the G side ankle wider or deeper than the E side?
Is Yes..... describe this to the guys and girls in the Violinmaking forum.
Many of them are really good at diagnosing problems. ( I just play one
on TV )

In addition to jethro's suggestion, I would try this. Loosen the G string,
lift the ball out of the tail piece, and turn it half over. This will give the bow
a new surface to work on. Sometime it helps a bit. |

The string is behaving better by reaching around a little more with the bow and using more pressure. Not sure this will do the trick at quicker tempos.
I wanted to try turning the string per J.R. suggestion but I find it is a Eudoxa with just a knot jammed into a fine tuner so I don't know what turning that might do.
(However, I am reminded that Eudoxas were probably the best strings I've had on this violin and I might try to dig them out again.) _________________ I NEVER PRACTICE. I'M NOT FAMOUS YET. |

Maybe its simply your bow position... try to play nearest of the bridge because the G string is more rude, adjust the weight (like you said) of the bow (that means in big your "center of gravity" ; let the natural weight of your arm holding the bow fall on the strings and it will play much louder...) But I guess you already know all that! Otherwise, if playin nearest the bridge doesn't work so maybe you just had to readjust your bridge... However I wish you good luck! Give us some news!

Seems to be better with the bow closer to bridge, a full square attack and the bow (hairs) flat. _________________ I NEVER PRACTICE. I'M NOT FAMOUS YET. |
