I think only 1 of the romeros plays any flamenco- they basicly play the
full blast classical pieces. Lots of classical spanish as well as traditional
classical composers. they are VERY good too !
Also Julian Bream is also a good classical player.
Also a player with the last name "York" - I can't recall his first name.
and there is Christopger Parkening too, and Leona Boyd !
all good !

As Ican see you have pretty strong feelings on Spanish music.. I know you don't have the system for proper youtube-ing but here's one worth watching...

G: I tried to learn to play classical guitar for about 7-8 years on and off.
Could allmost do it but my so called friend who was a geneius at it never
wanted to help me any. So I was trying to self teach and finaly gave up.
But I still love listening to it. Pepe Romero had an album called "romantic
gituar" or something like that...( cover has a picture of him walking on a beach) .It's the best of the best I think !!!!!! That
would be a good cross section of Romero music I think. ( I think my copy is out back in my workshop)
Somehow I missed that there even was a lucia M. forum. I will check it out ! I noticed that the musicians form here is kind of slow. It seems like another one (violinist.com) has more varied playing threads)
Or maybe it 's more that the questions I usualy ask are so stupid that everyone just KNOWS to ignore me !
Have you ever heard os Leo Kottke ? He is a 12 string folk singer but
I think he is pretty good. His first disk that has a fish on it is one
of his best. And then for vocal there is the cowboy junkies "trinity
session" disk. Great voice on Margo Timmons !
Just some more things to check out !

I must say you have a great nose for wonderful musicians Tim! (translation: I haven't heard of them.. )
Come on, you can learn to play anything if you really want to. Things would also be a lot easier in playing classical music if you have a background on piano.
I had an classmate in high school who was taught by her cousins the basic guitar chords only by teaching her the song Passenger Seat by Stephen Speaks. Three months after that, she could do plucking by playing songs by ear--and accurately too! (she cannot read written music very well)
So good luck with your music career!
...
By the way if you are wondering why it takes me so long to reply, it's because of the time difference (I'm in the Philippines and for all i know you're right on the other side of the earth) and I only get to be online by going to internet shops.
Have a lucky day! |

Having messed with many kinds of musical instruments I would say that classical guitar is possibly the most difficult of all and the violin is one of the easiest. ( i.e. "intuitive" )
Instead of chasing the cookie cutter wunderkinds, try some super violin as played by TIME FOR THREE. _________________ I NEVER PRACTICE. I'M NOT FAMOUS YET. |

Yes gizmo- I agree that classical guitar seems the hardest instrument to learn to play by ear- or by note. Nothing about it seems natural.
It felt like I could play the fiddle the first time I tried it (even if mistakenly)
What can I say Grace except there must be some advantage to middle age! (having heard more kinds of songs) I threw out those names of
gruips so you can have the fun of exploring never before heard sounds
and finding a new favorite gruip one after the other..... There seem to be
great sounds in every kind of music ( excet of coarse RAP and hip-hop -
which are not really music but comunist brainwashing for the unsuspecting
young minds) ( I'm stepping down from my soap box now....)
If you can find a big cd store that has all their songs on a computer so
you just wave the box under the scanner and listen to the cd samples
for that disk ...... that's the easiest way to listen to many different kinds
in a short while !
Would you believe I even like Shakira ????? She seems like she has a
LOT of natural tallent which probably most of which is lost (pearls to swine)
on most kids here.
And do you know who plays a really good classical guitar ??????????
Charro ! Yes !
And who plays a great fiddle you might never guess ?
Roy Clark ! Yes, I hear you saying who is roy clark ...............
He's an old guy who was popular in country music in the 1960's ...
but he is best known for his electric guitar feats of super-human-ness !
There is my dose of trivia for you for the week !
Tim
PS ( don't feel bad, I really don't know exactly who jethro tull is ! ) |

I'll find a CD store like that in our place ten years from now, hehe...
I used to like hiphop and rock but now I'm enlightened--they're murdering language and music AND put everyone's morality and eardrums in danger.
Middle-aged? And here i was thinking you and Gizmo are in your early twenties (good usernames you have ).
I don't care much about jethro tull, I've never heard him. Hide in your padded basement though if you're even thinking of saying anything derogatory about the Corrs.
Hmm.. I've read in Time magazine that Shakira wrote a song for the author of One Hundred Years of Solitude? I wonder if you've checked that out? It's bound to be a lot better than her previous dancy songs. |

|
|
Just got (accidently allmost) a new (to me) music video from the Chieftains. I allways thought they were a little too mainstream to be
my favorite- but I really like the performances. It has the chieftains
touring arround ireland visiting people and places they played over the past 40 or so years. They do a little interview between each set of music
and they play with several different other artists including Altan, Los Lobos, van morrison, ashley mac isaac (?) and steve cooney.
It seems to add a lot to be able to SEE the music being played.
Sorry Grace- did not see your violin babes ! ( you should E-Mail them
and straighten them out before their next disk ! ) I would like to see
Enya, Sinead O, The coors, Marie breatnath all playing together !
Sadly I don't have any connections !

Incidentally, there is currently a chart-topping song in Ireland called "The Ballad of Ronnie Drew" which is performed by U2 and numerous other performers, including Sinnead O'Connor and Andrea Corr (lead vocalist of the Corrs).
The Chieftains also did a song with the whole band of the Corrs more than 10 years ago called "I Know My Love"--a very uplifting song and you must check it out. |
