Cut the leather to the desired width. (Around 25mm)
Then cut a ca. 3mm wide chamfer on both ends. One from the inside and one from the outside. Then glue the end, that has the chamfer cut from the outside, onto the underside of the stick. You can use cyanoacrylate for that.
Now make sure that, when you wrap the leather around the stick, the chamfered edges meet. Then lay the bow on your leg, so that you can wrap the leather around the stick by rotating the stick. Apply the glue to the leather and wrap it up.
The last thing to do is narrowing the edges with a hot, dull knive or chisel.
You can see a slideshow of the making of a bow here http://www.gerbeth.at/making/sld094.htm ( unfortunately the text is in German)

I'm not even sure if it shrinks. But probably it does.
You don't need to make any cut there. The heat will do the job. So you could also use a screwdriver or anything like that.

Cut the width to 25 mm and the length needs to be trial fit to the bow. lay the leather on the bottom facet adn wrap ( bow hear to the left adn leather going from bottom facet down , away up and then back over. overlap the bottom facet again and then mark and cut square.
Bevel the edges as M lange says and then the front and bottom edges need to be beveled also, but only about 1.5 mm, just enough to overlap the curl at the silver and the wood near the frog. Once all is cut I roll it up so it will be easier to glue, then unroll.
Glueleather to bottom facet with elmers white of yellow ( actually a bit more than just the facet area.).
I press this against my apron for a few minutes and roll up the back edge( makes it easier when gluing the rest) Apply glue to the rest of the leather and troll up on apron and hold a minute or two.
Use a strong rubber band or blumbers teflon tape and wrap it around the leather piunching down good the small bevels on the front and back part of the leather.
Let stand 5-6 minutes and remove and clean and rewrap if necessary. |
