Has anyone tried a center mount chinrest?
I'm looking for a new chinrest. Right now I have the traditional one attached to the left side and I was curious about the center mount since I don't know its advantages or disadvantages. I also read that the Guarnerius type is the most popular... so any suggestions on that one too?
Thanx

Hello, g! This is going to be a really boring reply: If you have a decent music store near you, take your fiddle and see if they will let you try a bunch of different chin rests. Each person has his/her own way of holding the instrument is slightly differently - or there wouldn't be so many different chinrests available!

(I tried a friend's violin with a center-mounted chin rest and loved it, and so bought myself a center mounted rest for my viola, and it didn't work for me at all. Such a mount would seem to allow you to look down along the instrument's center length, which is good to do, but it doesn't always work.)

Good luck!

Shirley
