|

I want to do Solo & Ensemble Festival again next February, but I need help picking out a song. I'm kind of in the mood for something sad. I've been playing for 3 years, so I can't do something extrememly hard. I have 6.5 months to practice. I know that's a long time, but I reallly want to do well. So thank you in advance. If you know of a sad song, please let me know! _________________ - Justin : ) |

Well, I wish i could stop people from calling violin pieces "songs." But for three years, you might try the Barbara Barber:

The Book one has some nice pieces in it. I recommend the "La Cinquantaine" composed by Gabriel-Marie, which is very sort of, fiddler-on-the-roof, and sad. |

I'm sorry I'm not as technical as you. I know that a song is music that is sung, but you knew what I meant, and it was easier to type. But still, not exactly what I'm looking for. I'll keep searching. _________________ - Justin : ) |

But when you say "song" I really don't know what you want. A movement from a concerto? a sonata? a popular song? Impossible to tell. |

You would like "Ashokan Farewell" by Jay Unger, its almost entirely in first position, a very nice slow piece, very lovely. It was featured on the miniseries about the Civil War a few years ago, and was a big hit. You might be able to go to UTube and listen to someone else play it.
It can be played without any accompaniment. _________________ Dave in the Blue Ridge

If you want popular music there is a huge list here, including the Ashokan Farewell -- and a lot of it is in easy versions:

Another possibility which is very popular is the theme song from "schindler's list", you have enough time to be able to do this one, it will take a lot more practice than "Ashokan Farewell" but is quite beautiful and melancholic. Again, you can here many people play it on youtube.com and the music is available on-line from a number of sources for about $14 or so with piano accompaniment.
Here's a really professional rendition:

Thank you both for all of your help. I will probably go with Ashokan Farewell since I actually already have the music. I just kind of forgot about it . _________________ - Justin : ) |
