Wow, that's really nice, especially for a first. I used Hammerl 1A Varnish on my latest too, and an very pleased with the results. Where did you get your fittings, BTW? _________________ Making a Violin II

Thank You.
Your third violin looks great, too. Is it already strung up?
I bought the fittings from Dick in Germany.

What a great job, It's hard to believe it's your first violin. Very nice work. It really is inspiring.

Thank You very much Chris.
Aren't you working on your first violin, too?

Yes I am. It’s been a wonderful experience, especially with the interaction with all of the great people on the forums.
I must say you've raised the "newbie bar" considerably. Really impressive.

It would be nice to see some pictures of your violin, when you have finished it.

Last week-end, there was an exhibition of instruments and bows in Stuttgart.
It was by the "Klanggestalten" group. This is a group of master violin and bow makers.
There were lots of really beautiful instruments on display. I also went to the viola audition and the concert of the "Faust Quartett". They were playing on instruments of the exhibition.
But the best thing was, that Susanne Gebhardt, Gaspar Borchardt and Francois Denis had a look at my violin. They all are really nice and generous persons and they gave me lots of good advices. That was so encouraging.
So if you get the chance to go to one of these exhibitions or something similar, do it. It is really a big help for an self-taught beginner, like me.
Matthias
By the way, Francois Denis is self-taught too. |

Very nice work Matthias! I think I will sell my tools and take up another hobby! Seriously though, this looks just great. How does it sound?
Also, you are a fine photographer! |

Thank you very much.

I'm pretty sure that you won't be able to do this, because you are already addicted to violin-making. Just as all the other guys here.
I'm always interested in how others are doing on their violins. Maybe you want to post some pictures of your work? I'm sure it is as good as mine.
I wrote something about the sound earlier in this thread. It is hard to describe, though.
Hopefully I can start to build my next one soon. I already bought the wood, but have a lot of work to do at the university.

I wish it were as good as yours..... Seriously, you did a splendid job for your first instrument. I looked at the article that you reference of the 1709 ex Viotti Strad and you really captured many of the details. The scroll might be slightly wide at the very top and the pegbox walls might be a little thick but you have captured all of the details of the body quite nicely. Top notch work. As someone else mentioned, you definitely raised the bar for beginners. You are right that it is an addiction so yes, I will continue to learn and hopefully get better. Anyway, here is a link to my photos.

I just had a look at your photos. That is some nice clean work!
The scroll looks very good and the purfling is much better than mine.
Although, the corners are too big for my taste.

Thanks. Your exactly right. I need to re-work how I do the corners on my next instrument. They have become a little too long and wide for my taste as well. My eyes are still in training too. |
