Hi Ric,
Im a guitarist too, mainly self taught. Violin seems a very different animal! Having lessons on my violin, use a book when practicing & to try to spot posture mistakes etc.. Cant beat a person to look at you for half an hour a week & to pull you up on where your going wrong. Technique seems much more critical on the violin.
Enjoy the violin.

yes, i don't really have techniques as such, probably a very clumsy player, it's only practise which helps me hit notes?
it seems the angle of the bow is critical, lose that 'right angle' approach to the string, and the note slithers off into obscurity?
wow, good to actually be doing some bowing, though!

Bowing squarely is important. Correct elbow height eg.. level with forearm + bow hold + wrist action all contribute to keeping the bowing square. Also correct bow pressure, too. Ive had a lot of help from my teacher on these.
Left hand is another matter.
I love the guitar but taking the violin up is very intriguing & absorbing. I find it easier to motivate myself to practice the violin, for some reason.

... a pearl of wisdon gathered from somewhere:
The left hand makes the notes; the right hand makes the music. _________________ Steven Potter
