First I would like to say hello as this is my first post. I have found alot of information on here and it has been a great help. I've gotten the art of violin making and have read quite a bit of it and I think I am going to get strobels book as well, but I think I'm going to pick up a few tools to get started. I would like to post a link to the tools I am thinking of getting and would appreciate some opinions. I also need to get a plane but I am kinda clueless as to what I should get in the department. Below are the 3 chisels I am thinking of starting with. Do you think that would be enough to start with or would I be better off going with some different tools?

Well, those look like a start.

You will need saws, knives, scrapers, rasps & files, needle files, (finger planes - it's possible to work without these, but they sure make life easier.) You will also need a good quality jack plane or preferably a jointer plane for joining pieces for the plates, a coping saw, scroll saw or bandsaw, drill and bits, pegreamer, peg shaver, soundpost setting tools, bending iron, a vise, rules, compass, protractor, square, calipers, dividers, lining clamps, C-clamps, plate clamps.

Many of these tools you can make, others are readily available at most hardware stores, others are specific to violinmaking and would be available only through musical instrument supply houses.

I would check out Flea Market, and Garage sales, as well as E-Bay for used tools if you are cost concerned first, and then once you have all your basic tools, then go to the specialized instrument tool makers/sellers for the rest.

Part of it is I actually have play money right now to get some things. I want to try to get some of the more costly things whule I can now. I know where I can get alot of the normal tools I want fairly cheap and I am trying to snag some of the the other stuff like the finger planes and such for Christmas. can anyone link a good option for a plane for me?

Have you been to Dick Tools site?

http://www.dick.biz/dick/page/homepage/detail.jsf

Also Lie-Nielsen or Lee Valley tools.

http://www.leevalley.com/

http://www.lie-nielsen.com/

All three are expensive and produce top quality tools.

Go for the Ibex finger planes.
Dick has them.
Bit costly, but quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.
Get some good Japanese stones and a top quality grinder too!
Gonna have to keep the tools SHARP!!!!
