|
|
I have an old bow I want to fit with a real ivory tip liner. A friend has given me a piece of ivory from an old piano key. The question is ...what is the technique to bend ivory to fit the contour of the bow tip?
Thanks... Mat |

Hi Mat,
I usually heat the tip over a flame. _________________ Leif Luscombe

You might want to use a hair dryer or a heat gun the first time out so as not to burn the ivory.
I use a hot water bath and a top bending jig. You can also make a 2 part wooden jig exactly to fit the curve and press it in htat. when bending, go slowly.

Thanks for all the good advice... I have been slow at getting to this, but in the end it all worked out well... I boiled the ivory then bent it in a mold that matches the head. I was able to make 3 tips out of the one piece of ivory... not much to spare though!. I made a jig to clamp the tip and it worked well as this jig gives me full view all around to be sure it is aligned perfectly. I used G2 epoxy... set overnight and it came out good.
Cheers, Mat

big jig for such a small job, but if it works that is what matters.
Glad to hear it came out well! |
