I've been spirit varnishing for over 20 years now. Switched from oil varnishing quite a while back. The alcohol I use is a 200 proof ethanol (Anhydrous) type. I order 5 gallons at a time and it's very expensive. It comes from a local chemical supply company. I have no idea where they get it .
It and any solvent should be used in a well ventilated area. However the ethanol is the safer type of alcohol, if there is such a thing! Yikes!
Learn more about spirit varnishing on my upcoming "How to Spirit Varnish" DVD due out in August 2007. visit: hersheyviolins.com for more on this subject.
