The young lady with the fiddle showed up for my celtic music jam today. After two hours of jamming to jigs, reels and hornpipes and such, it was time for me learning a little more on her fiddle.
She worked on my arm positions and basic bowing technique. I was able to play some consistent-sounding open string notes. |

Keep it up, Caeman! Open strings are hard to play well - some think they are the hardest!

The open strings were easy for me. The problem started when I wanted to try some other notes. My wrist doesn't like the violin playing position. |

How's it coming, Caeman? You still giving it a hearty try? Do you know that nobody really likes the unnatural position one must take to play an instrument under the chin? Your wrist will get more turnable as you continue. Then after you learn to make decent sounds using your fingers, you will begin to realize how difficult it is to make the same "decent" sounds on the open strings!
Continued good luck! Shirley |

I was at an SCA event (a medieval re-enactment group) and I was playing my bodhran along with two fiddlers. They decided to take a break. One of them allowed me to 'fiddle' around for a bit. The hand position is definitely unnatural for me right now.
I am certain I will get past that once I own my own fiddle. |
