Thank you MATT! yes, it's a nice back, but when we get to make and apply a good varnish even an unflamed, humble wood looks beautifull.

Nice instrument! I especially like the cherry mahgany color. It looks good with the dark shading. Do you find that violas are like big violins, or are they different animals? If this posts it seems it only works for me after I get logged in. For some reason it takes several tries to do that.

Thank you all!

Hi Ken! I think good violas are not a "big violin" in general.... In general they are a bit wider, the C bouts are positioned higher in the body, as well as the bridge.

Hi moronsreign. Yes, I'll visit the North someday... NY probably.

Hi mapleleaf_gal: yes, you can ad me to your flickr page, no problem.

Nice viola, espacially like the back!
Is it a clear varnish over stained wood or is it a colored varnish?

Hi. The colour is mostly in the wood.

First, sun tanning, tea, light glue sizing, stain, more tea, light fumigation with amonia.

Ground: oil varnish (2 parts oil, one part colphony, one part mastic) paste with tripoli rubbed into the wood. I took the excess with a rag with kerosene, aplied a bit more of oil varnish and rubbed over the wood. This ground penetrated a bit in the wood (which was a bit porous) and that is responsible for the final result, I think.

Varnish:
one coat of Padding's "Doratura Cremonese" thinned with Kerosene and coloured with asphalt and Alizarin Crimson;
two coats of Padding's "Doraratura Rossa" used the same way. Used 1500 Micro Mesh betwen the coats, as well as tripoli. Polished with tripoli and polish. All that with a bit of varnishing experience...

The varnish has lots of texture.

stunning work... fantastic work....love the deep flare in the fluting of the top scroll....love the pegs and wood selection....that seems like some spendy material....and to top it all off you even look like a violin maker...haha...one could learn much from a man such as yourself.....
