A Question for some of the better violin players. Don't know exactly how
to word it , but will try.
When you are preparing to perform before an audience, and have the
violin up in the playing position, I notice a lot of players reach up to the
pegs and appear to be trying to fine tune the G or D String with the left
hand. Is this just a nervous gesture, or are you actually trying to turn the
pegs? I have never had a violin, that I was able to turn the pegs this easy
in this position, without them slipping. I have not been playing very long,
and was just curious. Thanks

I'm sure you will hear about "fit". "humidity" etc. but I will tell you something I heard from a top pro Luthier.

The magic ingredient is common Hill's peg composition which is labeled "to be applied sparingly" so I never used it regularly. The Luthier said to apply a little MORE than "sparingly" and the pegs MIGHT slip a little BUT let it sit overnight. Sounds odd but I did it and it worked and is still working.
