I have this violin that I made that has an open A that has a loud blaring, tinny sound. It is also on the A position on the D string, altho not quite as bad.Otherwise the instrument plays and handles great. What might be the problem, and how could this be corrected? Thanks in advance for your responses, Henry

Seems like a wolf note to me.
Did you bring your instrument to a luthier?
Tried some wolfnote eliminator?

Look at the bottom of this page:
http://www.violins.on.ca/mutes.html

This problem is more likely to happen with cellos and basses though.

Is it a violin you're talking about?

Regards,
François

There was a bug with the bulletin board, and I tried to reply a few times...

So, is it a violin, viola, cello?...

Yes, It's a full size violin. Thanks. I tried puting fishing split shot on the A string after length. This seamed to help but also deadend the notes otherwise.

Split shot is quite heavy... well... depending on the size.
I would guess that you would need around a quarter gram of weight on a violin or even less.
if you have a gram cale at your beck and call then weigh the weight and try and remove what you can with a file , remove a little and try it again. repeat until the wolf becones predoninant again then get another weight and file it down to the last measured weight that subdued the wolf note.
Most cellos only need between 1/2 to 1+ grams to subdue the wolf, a violin would need a lot less.
good luck.

If your A string is booming, check your bridge and soundpost setup.
