My G, D, and partly A strings are very quiet. It's almost like the bow doesn't get any resistance with the strings, and of course a very quiet sound comes out that is slightly scraping sounding. I put plenty of rosin on my bow, but the strings are still sounding this way. I tried to play closer to the bridge, but that creates a sound that is very undesirable.

I've posted twice in a row, but I'm having plenty of troubles!

Hello Atsem,

For acoustic violins, there are many factors contributing to good sound. I don't have experience with solid body violins.

However, with some questions and investigation, perhaps the source of the problem maybe revealed.

1. How tight is the bow hair on your bow? It should not be lose and or too tight but should have spring like resistance. You should still see a good curvature on upper half of the bow after tightening the bow button.

2. What is the condition of the hair on the bow? Microscopically, the rosin is supposed to lift up tiny hooks on the hair that grip on the strings.

3. What type of rosin are you using? Brand? Color? Are you in cold dry climate or humid?

4. Looking at your violin is there space between the strings and the fingerboard?

5. When you pluck the strings, how quiet are they?

The hair on my bow was just replaced recently, and it is tightened appropriately. The rosin I am using is a caramel color; I am not sure of the brand. I am in a quite cold climate. There is definitely space between the string and fingerboard. When I pluck the strings, they are pretty quiet, but it is, after all, a solid-body violin. Thanks for help! I would've responded sooner, but I've been busy.

Hmmm...

I was going to say that you need a softer rosin with more tack....however, it should not be quiet if you are plucking it,...that is if you are running the sound to an amplifier. Your comment, "after all, a solid-body violin" would imply that you are not doing this.

Please clarify.
