|

I have an old violin that hasn't been played in over 20 years. I'm trying to fix it up for my daughter. Got a new bow, put on new strings, and I realize that the sound post is dislodged and is rattling around in the inside of the violin. I don't remember if there's anything that I can do about this.
Any advice, suggestions?
Thanks so much! |

First cardinal rule... never tighten the strings without the soundpost in place. If you you have already done that, release the string tension asap otherwise you can distort or even crack the top... and that is trouble!
Depending on the situation, resetting a soundpost is an easy matter for a luthier...but then if the spoundpost is in a bad state of repair a new one will be required. If you want to re set it yourself, you will need some tools and learning. I recommend you see your local luthier first for an opinion.

Thanks, Mat. It's been a long time since I've touched this violin and your advice is highly appreciated. I hope that my local music shop will be able to help. There are not a lot of specialists in this area -- as I found when trying to get a nice bow rehaired. |

Depending on where you are, someone on the forum may be able to point you to a good luthier.... a few hours drive is often worth it.
Good luck, Mat |
